The God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob

God also said to Moses, “Say to the Israelites, `The LORD, the God of your fathers–the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob–has sent me to you.’ This is my name forever, the name by which I am to be remembered from generation to generation” (Exodus 3:15 NIV).

The name YHWH has been used 6,823 times in the Old Testament. This name of God is a personal name. And He revealed it in relation to His relationship with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.

So this name of God also helps us to draw near to Him. This is because He revealed this name in a context of His relationship with His people.

So whenever you say, “My God,” you can think of YHWH, who reveals Himself in a relationship with His people.

Such a thought of relationship with His people means that there is a particular intimacy for us in this name of God. Whenever we think of this name, it brings to mind a sense of close communion with God. No wonder, for example, David said, “The LORD [YHWH] is my Shepherd.”

Here, other names of God is not used, but this intimate, personal name of God. So there is an intimacy in this name from which you can draw comfort and strength and joy. It should also be noted that this great revelation of His personal name came in the context of God’s response to the suffering of His children.

Finally, when God says that this is His name forever and it is by this name that He would like generations to remember Him, we can understand the supreme importance of this name. That means that God would like us to think of Him in terms of this name.

It is a celebration of His relationship with you. It is a celebration of His intimacy with you. More than all this, this name helps you to think of God as a personal, living Being, who relates to you in a loving and lasting relationship.
