When the Lord brought back the captives to Zion, we were like men who dreamed. Our mouths were filled with laughter, our tongues with songs of joy. Then it was said among the nations, “The Lord has done great things for them” (Psalm 126:1,2 NIV).
The people of Jerusalem were in captivity in Babylon for a long time. Then through the decree of a pagan king they were able to return to Zion. This experience is described here.
Though it was through the pagan king that the decree came for their return, the writer of this psalm rightly acknowledges the fact that it was God who had brought them back to Zion. Let us open our eyes to this truth; that it is God who sets us free from captivity and brings us back to the place (Zion) where His glory dwells.
The decree for their return had come so suddenly and unexpectedly that the people did not know what to do because of their great joy and surprise. They thought that their freedom was just a dream. It took some time for them to realize that in reality they were truly free.
This is how God will work for you too. God shall give you a sudden relief from whatever sinful thing to which you were captive to, and you shall be like one who dreams.
God bringing deliverance to you is for sure an occasion of joy and celebration. Not only has God delivered you, but He has also brought you back to the place of worship where you now have fellowship with Him. Let your mouth be filled with laughter and let you tongues be ever praising God with songs of joy, for God has set you free.
And when others see all this, they shall testify, “The Lord has done great things for you.” May it come true for you!
