I will make you into a great nation and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing (Genesis 12:2 NIV).
This is God’s promise to Abram (later Abraham) when He called him to leave his country and go to the land that God would show him. Even though this was a special message to Abram, we can learn a few important truths from this passage.
The first thing we find here is that this blessing was subject to Abram’s obedience to God’s call. God is not at all reluctant to bless a person who moves out to do God’s will. Many people lose God’s blessing upon their lives simply because they fail to obey God’s call.
The second thing we find here is that there is definitely a reward for obedience. God’s blessing was wide in scope in Abram’s case. So being or becoming great by virtue of God’s blessing upon one’s life is a possibility in the life of any believer, who by faith, is a child of Abraham.
But the most important thing is the fact that Abram became a channel of God’s blessing to all peoples on earth. God blesses a person so that he may be a blessing. Many people are not blessed because they seek God’s blessing only for their lives alone. God’s blessing will come upon your life when you are ready and willing to be a blessing!
In Abraham’s life we find God fulfilling what He promised. Abram did what God asked him to do. And God blessed him to be a blessing. It is a great privilege to be called by God and blessed by God to be a blessing!
