Many Christians are often tormented by the fear of death. Yet it is a deceptive attack of the devil. When he succeeds in putting the fear of death in your minds he effectively destroys your peace of mind and also destroys your ability to tell others about Christ.
You have to note that this attack is not aimed at your assurance of eternal life. It is aimed at making you live in fear. It is aimed at making you think of disasters that might never happen. It is aimed at making you doubt the care of God for you and His abundance of grace that is available to meet all kinds of emergency.
The devil does this by creating fear in us when we hear and see in the media the bad news that comes out everyday. Yet God wants us look to Him. The devil creates fear by sending nightmares during our sleep. Sometimes we wake up in sweat.
Yet know that God is the one who stands watch when you sleep. He sleeps not (Ref. Psalm 121:3,4). You need to constantly refresh your mind with this unchangeable reality when under attack from the enemy especially during nights.
You also need to arm yourself with God’s word to meet the fear of death. Because the devil is using all lies to numb your senses by making you afraid. He does it so that you will live like a dead Christian. That means you will not be an effective witness for Jesus as long as the fear of death has mastered you.
Now is the time to break free. For this is what Jesus came to do when He shared in our humanity: “. . . he too shared in their humanity so that by his death he might destroy him who holds the power of death–that is, the devil–and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear of death” (Hebrews 2:14,15 NIV).
Be glad because Jesus came to destroy our fear of death. So hold on to Him who went through death and triumphed over it.
