Woe to Me! I Am a Man of Unclean Lips
“Woe to me!” I cried. “I am ruined! For I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips, and my eyes have seen the King, the Lord Almighty” (Isaiah 6:5 NIV).
“Woe to me!” What other response is possible? The awesome majesty of God’s holiness cannot inspire any other response in sinful, earthly man. So great is the gulf between the holy God and sinful men. This day, catch a vision of this awesome holiness of God. For many modern preachers have made God to look like such a friendly neighbor. How far away it is from the truth! Therefore this day, catch a vision of the holy and awesome God.
Now why did Isaiah cry out, “I am a man of unclean lips”? It was because he suddenly realized that the best praises that he could render God was inadequate. More than that if our motives in worship could be weighed in God’s Balances, it will be found to be impure and sinful. So he cried out about his unclean lips that could not offer pure praise and worship.
He also cried out that he was ruined because He saw the King, the Lord Almighty. It was because no man could see God and live. Therefore that vision of God was most terrifying. In the light of this revelation of God, it would be great if you and I could restore to God the honor due Him–the King, the Lord Almighty!
Finally, this passage clearly puts before us the intense response that a vision of God on the throne can evoke in any man. This response can only be one like that Prophet Isaiah had: A true realization of one’s wretchedness before God; a burning sensation of one’s own sinfulness and terrible sense of ruin that can descend upon you. Remember, a vision of God on the throne can evoke no other response!
