The Spirit of God Was Hovering

Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters (Genesis 1:2 NIV).

When a man turns to Christ and accepts Jesus as Savior and Lord, there is a certain condition that prevails before his acceptance. It is similar to the condition described in this verse. The heart of such a man would be formless and empty and darkness would prevail.

And then the conversion happens. It is the work of the Spirit of God. Just before the conversion, the Spirit of God would be hovering over his heart; preparing his heart to yield to the love of God. This is the work of preparation; a labor of love.

Formlessness and emptiness and darkness do not prevent God from working His miracles. The process of creation is not hindered by such negative circumstances. The Spirit of God keeps hovering over the hearts of repentant sinners. The conditions described here would dishearten men; but not God.

Again, the hovering over the waters should mean that a definite time of preparation is necessary for God to work. A man has to be receptive to the gospel if he should find God. Sometimes it takes time to prepare his heart to be ready to accept God into his heart and life.

Perhaps the darkness in a man’s heart may need a constant hovering of the Spirit of God to break into it with light. Maybe the constant hovering is needed to fill the emptiness with Christ; and turn formlessness to God’s likeness!
