“For God so loved the world that he gave!” Thus began the story of Christmas when God gave the gift of his one and only Son, Jesus Christ, to the world.
This gift came as a child born in a manger-a living gift people could see and touch. This brought God near to us like never before as he became truly and fully human in Jesus. This nearness to us is what the gift of Christmas is all about.
When God gave this gift he had a great desire that “whoever believes in him shall not perish, but have eternal life.” Therefore the gift of Christmas is also about unending life as well; a timeless time when God will wipe every tear from our eyes.
This life comes to us because God took the initiative to be friends with us. It is amazing since we are clearly in the wrong. “But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” Thus the gift of Christmas is God telling us, “Let’s be friends.”
Yes, God is near and there is heaven’s door open for us with God ready to welcome us home as friends for ever. When we begin to unwrap our Christmas gifts, what shall we find? Certainly many things colourful, useful, and costly. But nothing can compare with the indescribable gift of Immanuel which means “God with us!”
