In the thirtieth year, in the fourth month on the fifth day, while I was among the exiles by the Kebar River, the heavens were opened and I saw visions of God (Ezekiel 1:1 NIV).
First of all, what is recorded in the Book of Ezekiel is no fantasy or fiction or imagination. It is a specific revelation that God gave of Himself to him.
Therefore his record begins with a specific date and circumstance surrounding the vision. He is definitely rooted to his earthly existence while he is given visions of heaven.
Secondly, no circumstance can prevent God from revealing Himself to you if He chooses to do so. Here was Ezekiel, who himself was a captive; living among the exiles in the land of their enemies, the Babylonians.
In our normal assessment; it is not an ideal situation to have a vision. He was not in a prayer meeting where revival was breaking out.
Instead this man was by the river among people who were reaping the consequences of their nation’s sin and rebellion against God. In such unlikely circumstances God reveals glorious visions of Himself.
Thirdly, the heavens were opened. It tells us an important truth. No one can choose to get revelations and get knowledge of what is happening in the heavens. Instead they have to be opened by God. Only then can anyone know what is happening inside.
And instances of such opening of the heavens are very rare indeed. God reserves it for very special revelations that shall bring messages of His holiness, glory, judgment, mercy, comfort and restoration to His people.
Finally, heaven might reveal many great and splendid scenes; angels and heavenly beings included. They all defy description.
But you will always do well to remember that the heavens are opened to reveal visions of God. He and His throne are the central focus of all visions when the heavens are opened.
