The Zeal of the Lord Almighty Will Accomplish This

The zeal of the Lord Almighty will accomplish this (2 Kings 19:31b NIV).

Impossible situations are times when the zeal of the Lord Almighty shall accomplish great things. But what is this zeal?

It is an intense passionate enthusiasm that the Lord displays for what He is concerned about to get it done.

As we look at the historical context in which this truth is given, we find that Hezekiah who was a godly king, was threatened by a powerful king of Assyria who had sent commanders to him to destroy his confidence in the Lord.

But Hezekiah did one thing. He took the matter to God in prayer. First he sent a message to Prophet Isaiah to pray about the threat. He then received an encouraging reply.

Then came the next threat. This time Hezekiah personally went to the temple to put the matter before God (in fact he spread out the threatening message before the Lord!) and prayed.

He acknowledged that the Assyrians were really powerful. But He wanted God to demonstrate His power and deliverance on behalf of His people so that the kingdoms of this world might know that the Lord alone is God.

Two things stand out in Hezekiah:

First, he prayed. He knew that God alone could do something awesomely great to rescue him and his kingdom.

Second, he wanted God to be exalted through the deliverance that God would bring. Hezekiah did not even think of personal fame, success or glory when he prayed for deliverance.

You should note that it was an impossible situation. No human agency could have delivered Hezekiah and his kingdom. But God, in response to their prayer, promised deliverance.

And to put an end to all doubt as to how it was going to be accomplished it was told Hezekiah that the zeal of the Lord Almighty will accomplish this. God did so by having a hundred and eighty-five thousand men in the Assyrian camp put to death that same night by the angel of the Lord!

Remember, impossible situations in life are times when the zeal of the Lord; His concern and intense passionate desire for your rescue, shall accomplish great things for you if you pray. And when you pray remember to desire God’s glory in the deliverance and not yours!
