I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you (Psalm 119:11 NIV).
We often think that many of the sins that we do affect only ourselves or sometimes other people. It may or may not be true. But all sin affects Someone else. This Someone is God Himself. All sin, whether we term it as small or big, is against God.
Since all sin is against God, this knowledge should become our motivation to enable us not to sin. We should determine in our hearts not to sin. But taking such a decision alone will not help us to stop sinning simply because the tendency to sin is very strong in us.
It is for this reason that the Psalmist says that he has hidden God’s Word in his heart that he may not sin against God. When the enemy knows that soldiers of the land are hiding in secret places and waiting for them, they will hesitate to make an open attack.
This is what God’s Word stored in our heart does. It acts as a checking force against the onslaught of the enemy.
Again, what we store as precious in our heart is brought back to remembrance quite often. Thus God’s Word hidden in the heart will help us to think of God and His commands often. As we meditate on God and His holiness, we will not be led to sin easily.
For this reason let us store up God’s Word in our hearts. Let us hide them in our heart that the enemy may not steal it away. Let us make room in our hearts for God’s Word.
Let whatever else that is of least importance be cleared away that God’s Word may be safely hidden.
