Joseph in Prison

When his master heard the story his wife told him, saying, “This is how your slave treated me,” he burned with anger. Joseph’s master took him and put him in prison, the place where the king’s prisoners were confined (Genesis 39:19,20 NIV).

Resisting temptation does not automatically bring praise or rewards to you. In fact, something opposite to this might be what happens. That was what happened to Joseph too.

Joseph resisted temptation. When it crossed all limits he just ran away from the source of temptation. But when he ran away he had to leave his cloak in the hands of his mistress.

At times it is wise to lose something than stay to yield to temptation. We often fall into sin when we wait to think of the silly things that we may lose if we run away from the source of temptation.

When Joseph had run away the mistress slandered him. She gave a very wrong report about Joseph to her household servants. And she produced the false evidence of the cloak too. She also said the same thing when her husband came home. And Joseph’s master burned with anger and put Joseph in prison.

Just because you resisted temptation you may not escape the wrath of the enemy. You may have to face false accusations and slander. Sometimes, like Joseph, you may not be in a position to defend yourself. And you may be unjustly punished too.

It may also happen that from the paths of duty which you faithfully followed you may suddenly find yourself in a prison. It may be a removal from greatness to obscurity. But take heart! It is the prison where the king’s prisoners are confined!
