A Watchman

Son of man, I have made you a watchman for the house of Israel; so hear the word I speak and give them warning from me (Ezekiel 33:7 NIV).

A watchman may have the lowest rank in the list of a king’s soldiers. But in importance this post is key to the safety of the king and his subjects.

A watchman has to keep watch vigilantly when the city is quiet in sleep. Or even during day time he has to be alert to see any danger coming from any direction. So the post demands faithfulness in one’s duty and constant vigilance at all times.

Any small lapse in duty can result in great danger to the watchman personally and to the people of the city at large. It can cause utter destruction and doom.

The watchman’s main duty is to warn the king and the people of any coming danger. If he fails in his duty everyone’s life is in great danger. And he will be held personally responsible for the loss.

God is using here the picture of a watchman. In fact, in God’s eyes, each believer is a watchman. We are supposed to hear God’s word and give warning to our fellowmen. We have to warn them to turn from their wicked ways and repent and turn to God.

If we do not warn them, God will hold us accountable for their blood. We cannot escape this responsibility because God has called each one of us to be a watchman.

Let us realize the great responsibility that God has placed on us. Let us warn the people that they may be saved. They may not like it; they may not accept it or even they may laugh us off. Yet let us do our duty. It is to warn!
