Will God Forget You?

Believers can have doubts. It is common. Sometimes doubts can come after you have walked close to God for several years. There are several reasons why doubts can come. Let us look at a few reasons.

Assurance of Salvation

Young believers often get distressed when they sin. Satan immediately comes with the accusation that they have lost their salvation. Some people keep on asking God’s forgiveness again and again and again because they fear losing salvation.

But what is the truth regarding this. The Bible says that you are God’s child the moment you receive Jesus Christ as your Saviour and Lord. It also says that it is possible that you sin even after this. If it so happens, you can immediately seek God’s forgiveness by confessing your sin and seeking the cleansing through the blood of Jesus. The Bible declares that God will not remember your sin if you have been cleansed by the blood of Jesus.

So remember, if you have repented and confessed your sin to God, no one can separate you from the love of God. He has said, “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you” (Hebrews 13:5).

Doubts When God Does Not Act the Way You Expect

John the Baptist was sent by God to announce to the world the coming of Jesus Christ. He fearlessly and boldly pointed people to Jesus Christ. But he was put to prison by King Herod. While he was in prison several doubts came to his mind. Is Jesus, the one he pointed to the world as its Saviour, the true Messiah? That was one of his key doubts.

This doubt came because John, like many others, was thinking about Jesus as an earthly king who will rule with power. But Jesus was going about in a humble manner, preaching and teaching and healing. So John, after having enjoyed so much popularity with the crowds and now finding himself alone in prison, is troubled by doubts. Therefore he sends messengers to Jesus.

Jesus is not troubled by John’s doubts. He answers John in the words of Prophet Isaiah (chapter 35:5, 6). That passage talked about the miracles that will happen when God visited his people. Jesus was fulfilling that before the people.

Note a few things here. Walking with Jesus for several years and doing great works for him does not prevent you from having doubts. But when doubts come, do what John did. Take your doubts straight to Jesus. Now how did Jesus choose to answer him? As always, Jesus pointed to the Scriptures. So when you have doubts take more time to prayerfully read and meditate on God’s Word. It will speak a word of hope and assurance and courage in your time of need.

Doubts can be like flaming arrows that are shot at you by your enemy. Paul asks you to take up the shield of faith to extinguish ALL the flaming arrows of the evil one (Ephesians 6:16). Why is the shield of faith important? Because doubt can only be conquered by faith! So trust God even when doubts come to you!

Your Emotional Need

We are people who become emotional from time to time. That is why we cry. God understands all this. That is why the Bible promises a day when God will wipe every tear from the eyes of his people. God also promises that weeping may remain for a night, but rejoicing comes in the morning.

Next time, you feel left alone and unloved, think on what God has said. He asked whether it is possible for a mother to forget the baby at her breast. Usually when a baby cries the mother rushes to the baby and takes the child in her arms and comforts the child. That is the way mothers behave. Yet, in some cases we find even mothers forgetting their children.

Now that is quite unlike mothers. So God says, a mother may forget but I will not forget you. You can believe this because it is God who has said it. His word is truth. There is no change.

Remember that this promise came in response to people’s complaint, “The LORD has forsaken me, the LORD has forgotten me” (Isaiah 49:14).

So do not ask whether God likes you. Know that he has chosen you not because of any good thing you have done. He has loved you knowing all about you. He knows your failures and mistakes. He knows your secret sins. He knows your anger and bitterness. But he loves you in spite of all this.

So what shall be your response? Just come to him as you are right now. Do not wait. Remember the story that Jesus said. When the younger son who had wasted his life and possessions came home, his father was waiting for him. Not only so, the father ran all the way to meet him and embrace him. This is the love of God the Father. He is running towards you. See, he has not forgotten you and never will.
