Mighty God

“For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,1, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace” (Isaiah 9:6 NIV).

A child! How can a child be “Mighty God?”

This is the mystery of Christmas and its undeniable reality. The God of heaven, the God who created all the universe by His wisdom and power is now a child. But still He is Mighty God. For He is still the same God2.

Still He chose to woo people by His love and sacrifice rather than His might. But He has left us with glimpses of His mighty power. He walked upon the waters of the seas, stilled the winds and the waves, healed the sick, opened blind eyes, made lepers whole, raised the dead and provided food to multitudes. More than that demons trembled and obeyed Him at His word. These were demonstrations of His might.

Christmas, therefore should not be a season for light-hearted merriment. We have to meditate on this Mighty God. What happens when He is born in our hearts? He does so as a child as He did two thousand years ago in Bethlehem. Is that reason to consider Him weak? No. He is mighty in power. He still chooses to woo us in love. He is patient. But that should not make us negligent of this Mighty God.

Have we taken time to think of the real impact of this Mighty God within us? Have we truly realized that “the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world” (1 John 4:4b NIV)? If we have realized that what difference has it made in our lives? Has it changed our outlook? Has it made us rely on God more? Has it given us power over the forces of darkness? Think about this.

Let this Christmas bring thoughts of Jesus as Mighty God.
