God has given us His Word to fight Satan. It is given to us as an attacking weapon. That is why the Word of God is called “the sword of the Spirit.” (Ref. Ephesians 6:17b and Hebrews 4:12).
But how can you use the sword if you are not familiar with it? So as a Christian, if you wish to win the war against sin, it is important to learn to use the sword. And you learn to use it effectively by getting familiar with it day by day.
No soldier becomes a great warrior overnight. He spends days and months and years in training perfecting the art of sword fighting. Even when he becomes an expert he practices everyday with the sword so that he will not lose his expertise. We should learn much from this!
The first step is to hide God’s Word within your heart by reading, meditating and memorizing the Scriptures. This helps you become familiar with God’s Word and helps you not to sin against the Lord (Ref. Psalm 119:11).
The second step is to take delight in God’s Word. Many read the Bible as if it is a big burden. That attitude must change. The Bible does have some difficult portions. Yet it is God’s message to you. When you delight in God’s Word you will not keep the company of sinners but will yield fruit for God (Ref. Psalm 1).
The third step is to learn to use the Word of God as the sword of the Spirit in your battle against temptations. We can learn to use the sword from Jesus’ use of Scripture when Satan misquoted it to Him (Ref. Matthew 4 and Luke 4). So, hold it firm and strike with all your might!
