Turn Back the Battle at the Gate

He will be a spirit of justice to him who sits in judgment, a source of strength to those who turn back the battle at the gate (Isaiah 28:6 NIV).

The enemies are attacking. We are inside our fort. The fort is high and strong. It cannot be easily climbed over or broken down. So the enemies are right at our gate.

It is that one place which could be opened with much attack. And therefore that is a key entrance-point that needs to be guarded.

A fort may have only one gate. But our heart has many gateways. We have to be constantly on our guard. For the attack is always concentrated on gateways. We need to put our best spiritual resources to fight at the gate.

Yet we need not trust in our strength. This is our comfort. We are told here that the Lord Himself will be “a source of strength to those who turn back the battle at the gate.”

Our strength might fail. But when we are plugged into God Himself, we need not lack strength. Because the source is unending; and the supply without limit. Therefore we can be confident that God’s special care is upon us as we battle at the gate.

This is because there are great advantages in turning back the battle at the gate itself. We can be safe. The fort can remain unconquered. And the devil will have no foothold within!

It is a blessed privilege to be part of the team of those who turn back the battle at the gate. Yet it requires constant watchfulness. We need to be ever alert to the possibility of an enemy attack. And when it occurs you need not lose heart fighting them.

Because the Lord Himself is the source of your strength. He shall not fail you. That is because the work of those who turn back the battle at the gate is precious in His eyes!
