You Will Be Disappointed by Egypt

Why do you go about so much, changing your ways? You will be disappointed by Egypt as you were by Assyria. You will also leave that place with your hands on your head, for the Lord has rejected those you trust; you will not be helped by them (Jeremiah 2:36,37 NIV).

Those who do not care to walk in God’s way will find themselves always changing ways. It is an outward expression of their inward confusion. Each time they change ways it is in the hope that this time things will be better.

But without God to guide them, they will be disappointed each time they chose a different way than God’s way. It does not matter where the way you have chosen leads you to. It does not matter whether your way leads to Egypt or Assyria. For the end of all these ways spell “Disappointment.”

No better picture can be used to describe their disappointment other than the one used here. With all the emphasis on body language in today’s world you cannot miss the impact of the image of leaving a place with one’s hands on one’s head. It shows total disappointment.

This happens because God rejects those you trust. The natural consequence is that you will not be helped by them. In other words God can help you if you trust Him. But if you choose to trust in other sources of help God can cause them not to help you. So you will find everything working against you.

Therefore do not run here and there trying to get things done. Rely on God alone. He shall show you favor. But if you choose not to trust in God but trust in other sources of confidence you will keep on changing ways. And always it will end in disappointment. You will not be helped by them at all.
