Resist the Devil

“Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you” (James 4:17 NIV).

In your struggle against the devil you lose many times because you do not resist him. The devil is an enemy who flees when resisted. This is a truth that you need to understand.

But then why does he win so often, you might ask, even after you have resisted? The answer is not difficult. You gave in to his temptations too soon because it felt overwhelming.

The Bible speaks of resistance of a higher kind: “In your struggle against sin, you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding your blood” (Hebrews 12:4 NIV). So don’t give in.

Struggle against sin with all the faith and determination and courage that you can muster. Then the devil will flee.

Make it a habit to resist even though you might have lost a few battles against sin after resisting for a long time. Do not get discouraged when you find yourself falling into sin after a long resistance.

You fall into a flood of sin after prolonged resistance because you forget the fact that “Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.” (1 Peter 5:8b NIV).

So he waits for his opportunity (Ref. Luke 4:13) and strikes again. This time he may find you unguarded because you are weary after the long resistance. You might have relaxed thinking that the attack is over.

But know that when one series of attack gets over you’ve to be prepared for the next: “Be self-controlled and alert”(1 Peter 5:8a NIV).

The Bible again says: “Resist him, standing firm in the faith”(1 Peter 5:9a NIV). Therefore, resist the devil, no matter what the cost!
