Dealing with Guilt

One of the strongest causes of unhappiness for a young and growing Christian is the torment of guilt. He may be sure that his sins are forgiven.

Yet he feels guilty. The main reason for this is the lack of knowledge of what God’s Word says about being free from guilt.

The first thing that you need to note is that God’s forgiveness of your sin also takes care of your guilt: “Then I acknowledged my sin to you and did not cover up my iniquity. I said, ‘I will confess my transgressions to the Lord’–and you forgave the guilt of my sin” (Psalm 32:5 NIV).

From this verse it is clear that God frees your conscience from the pricking feeling of guilt when you confess your sins. Think of this truth when guilt attacks.

The second thing you need to note that the blood of Jesus that is sprinkled in your heart cleanses you from a guilty conscience: “Let us draw near to God with a sincere heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience” (Hebrews 10:22a NIV).

When you feel guilty just remind yourself that your heart has been sprinkled by His blood.

The third thing you need to note is that you have peace with God because your sins are forgiven. God accepts you as a righteous person when you believe in Jesus Christ.

The punishment of sin is removed from you: “Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ” (Romans 5:1 NIV).

Having `peace with God’ means that you need not punish yourself with guilty thoughts since God has fully accepted you. Now, enjoy His peace!
