Our God is our guide. The Psalmist says that He will be our guide even to the end.
God’s guidance is clear and unmistakable.
When He guides there will be no room for doubt. For example, God guided Samuel to the home of Jesse to anoint David. When he was impressed by seeing the eldest son in the family, God told Samuel not to consider his appearance or his height, for He had rejected him. Instead God looks at the heart. And David was a man after God’s own heart.
So Samuel was led to anoint David. Samuel was thus clearly guided to do it. Remember this happened while Saul was king and Samuel’s life could have been in danger for doing so.
God’s guidance is available by day and by night.
The Psalmist says that “He who watches over you will not slumber; indeed, he who watches over Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.” When the Israelites went out of Egypt the Lord went ahead of them in a pillar of cloud by day to guide them and by night in a pillar of fire to give them light. So, God’s guidance is continually available to God’s children by day and by night.
God’s guidance is available for marriage.
Abraham’s servant was led by God to meet Rebekah. Samson’s interest in a young Philistine woman was from the Lord. Ruth found herself working in a field belonging to Boaz whom she eventually married. Esther was chosen to be queen because she won the favor and approval of the king. Indeed her coming to royal position from being an orphan girl was God’s plan to save the Jews from a great holocaust.
And Jesus was invited to the marriage at Cana in Galilee. This invitation gave Jesus the opportunity to reveal His glory by turning water into wine. When Jesus is invited to your marriage decisions He transforms the ordinary to something sweet by His blessing!
The guidance of the Holy Spirit is available to believers today.
Many examples have been recorded in the Bible. At the time of Jesus being presented in the temple, Simeon was moved by the Spirit of God to go into the temple courts to meet the child Jesus. During a time of worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit told the church in Antioch to set apart for Him Barnabas and Saul for the work to which He had called them. On another occasion, the Holy Spirit prevented Paul and his companions from preaching the word in the province of Asia and Bithynia. This was done in order to guide them to Macedonia where precious souls were saved.
Guidance comes through the Bible.
It is sad to note that Christians seek visions and dreams to be guided. They look to men of God to give them guidance. Some others are guided by circumstances. All this has its place in God’s kingdom. But look to the example of Jesus. He loved God’s Word. He was guided by it throughout His life. In the desert where the devil tempted Him, He was able to triumph because He used God’s Word to defeat Satan.
God’s Word gives sure and unmistakable guidance for it contains the wise counsel and the will of God. That is why the Psalmist wrote: “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path.” A mind saturated with God’s Word will be naturally guided in God’s ways. This is the great secret of guidance!
