Simple Choices vs Major Decisions

To live a life that pleases God is definitely not easy, but it is also not impossible. We think that it takes major decisions to live a God-pleasing life. But the truth is far from it.

More than major decisions, what counts for a God-pleasing life are the simple choices we make everyday in the normal run of life.

Let us try to understand this through an example. Someone who has taken a major decision to live a holy life will have to make a choice to look or not to look at something sinful as he goes about his daily work.

He cannot keep looking at this sinful thing thinking that holy living is only about big things like not committing adultery.

In God’s eyes this simple choice of not looking with evil intent at something sinful is equally important as a major decision of living a holy life.

And it would surprise us to note that a major decision is actually put to test by the simple choices that we make everyday. And the opportunities to make these simple choices abound!

God is more concerned about how we choose to think, speak and act in situations where there is a struggle between right and wrong than in the major decisions that we might have made. Joseph is a good example of this because he chose not to be in the presence of Potiphar’s wife when he came to know of her evil intent (Ref. Genesis 39:10).

One of Joseph’s major decisions was to live a holy life. But he also knew that to make this major decision come true he had to make a simple choice of not being in her presence. We should also continually make simple choices like these if we are truly committed to our major decision to live a God-pleasing life.
