Prayer-Stand in the Gap

Many Christians want to serve God. But they do not know how to do it. The best way to do it is to stand before God on behalf of others. You can best serve God in this manner.

We often think much about our struggles and difficulties in life. But at the same time, we need to remember that there are many Christian brothers and sisters who are much less fortunate in life than us. We need to uphold them much in prayer.

At the same time we find moral decay and sin within the Church of God itself. So was the condition of the Israelites during the time of Ezekiel. The prophet saw visions in which he saw the glory of God depart from the temple and from the city of Jerusalem itself. This is the same situation we are facing today. The Church is losing its saltiness.

We need to pray earnestly about this situation. God found it surprising that there was no one to stand on behalf of the Israelites to pray for them: “I looked for a man among them who would build up the wall and stand before me in the gap on behalf of the land so I would not have to destroy it” (Ezekiel 22:30 NIV).

A broken wall is dangerous; isn’t it? It can easily allow evil influences to come in. That is why we find the wisdom of this world creating so much trouble within the Church by bringing in through the gaps teachings and traditions contradicting God’s Word and its absolute authority.

In this context, God was and still is looking for someone who would stand in that gap. And close it with prayer. See, prayer can be a wall of fire. The question is whether you will decide to pray for others, and do it faithfully.

We find Moses saving the Israelites from sure destruction by standing between them and God and pleading with God for them (Psalm 106:23). You too can save many from God’s wrath by pleading for them in prayer.

Prayer of this kind needs involvement from your part. You need to get to know the persons you are praying for. If they are in faraway lands, get to know more about their specific situation, needs, and the kind of work they are involved in.

Then start praying. It is not a general prayer but specifically remembering their situation that releases God’s power and brings about His deliverance in their lives.

Will you not be a man or woman of prayer who can make a difference in the lives of others? This is the best way you can serve God. None of your labours in prayer will be wasted. Someday you’ll know how great an impact your prayers made. Till then go on praying. Stand in the gap and pray! Start now!
