Forget the Former Things

Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the desert and streams in the wasteland (Isaiah 43:18,19 NIV).

Here is God’s blueprint for our lives. He is telling us the secret of living continuously in the strength that He provides. If we follow the instructions given here we need not live a hit or miss Christian life.

The first instruction is not to think about former things. We are asked not to dwell on the past. This is because God always wants us to move in step with Him. The past with its glories is not sufficient to meet the dangers of today’s battles. The past with its sin has been dealt with by God (by the blood of Jesus). So the past stands sealed.

Now God is asking us to focus attention on the new thing that He is going to do for you. In fact, God has already begun the work. It seems that you are still so much engrossed in your past that you fail to see the budding of new growth around you.

The new growth around you brings you the message of hope that God is still at work on your behalf. And God is asking you, “Are you not aware of what is being done for you?” And God says that He is doing it “Now!”

If you have failed to see it, it can be because of only two reasons: You are so much looking to your past and its experiences are having a strong and negative grip on your mind. Or you are not able to see what God is doing for you because you think it is impossible.

The desert cannot prevent God from making a way there for you. The wasteland cannot but allow God to open streams in it for you. Look and see, God is working; it is happening now!
