The Lord God Almighty Is His Name

He who forms the mountains, creates the wind, and reveals his thoughts to man, he who turns dawn to darkness, and treads the high places of the earth–the Lord God Almighty is his name (Amos 4:13 NIV).

Look at the myriad works of God. He forms the mountains. They are a tower of strength. Full of majesty and beauty. Their peaks kiss the skies. They make us look upwards to the heavens. It turns our thoughts easily to God.

Now turn your attention to the winds. Man can feel its power. It can blow gently causing us to enjoy the feel. It can remind us of the love of God coming gently to us. But the wind can tear the rocks apart when it blows in fury. It can cause the sea to swell and the waves to rise to great heights. It can cause great destruction too. That reminds us of God’s great judgments.

God is also described here in a very strange way. He is described as on who turns dawn to darkness. We are used to God described as the One who creates light. But here the break of the first gleams of light at dawn is turned to darkness. And this work is attributed to God. It tells us that God is beyond our calculations and the limitations that we place on God.

Finally, it is said that He walks upon the high places of the earth. Though man has stood on the highest places and summits on earth, it has happened only after laborious effort, long planning and continuous attempts. And these achievements were achieved by only very few people. But God walks upon the high places of the earth effortlessly. These high places tower above us but He walks upon them. The Lord God Almighty is His name!
