The Mind–An Explosive MinefieldĀ  (Part 4) Your Eye–The Gateway to Your Mind

Jesus said: “The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are good your whole body will be full of light. But if your eyes are bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light within you is darkness, how great is that darkness” (Matthew 6:22, 23 NIV).

Jesus said this because He knew that the eye is the gateway to the mind. It is through this powerful sense that we get impressions in the mind and we make judgements about others.

All these impressions are like mines. They lie buried in the mind. And when an opportunity presents itself and you feel tempted these mines start to explode within your mind. It leads you to sin.

The Bible is very clear about the eye being the gateway to the mind. In Genesis chapter 3 verse 6 we read that it was “when the woman SAW that the fruit of the tree was good for food and PLEASING TO THE EYE” that she was led to sin.

In 2 Samuel chapter 11 verse 2 we read that from the roof of the palace King David SAW a woman bathing. He saw that she was beautiful and committed adultery with her which also led to the murder of her husband.

In both these instances we find that the invitation to sin entered their minds through the eye. John calls this “the lust of the eyes” (Ref. 1 John 2:16).

Jesus said that to LOOK at a woman lustfully means that you’ve already committed adultery with her in your heart (Matthew 5:28). Job understood this and therefore said: “I have made a covenant with my eyes, NOT TO LOOK lustfully at a girl” (Job 31:1 NIV).

So it is very important to see that you avoid the wrong look. By avoiding it you are preventing explosive mines from being planted in your mind. It will help you not to sin. Guard your eye diligently. Keep this gateway pure!
