Taming Your Tongue (Part 1)

One of the greatest expositions in the entire Bible on the Tongue occurs at James 3: 1 to 12. Read it and take it to heart.

James tells us that though the tongue is a small part of the body it makes great boasts. It is also like a fire and world of evil corrupting the whole person. It is also compared to a restless evil, full of deadly poison.

James sadly tells that no man has tamed the tongue though man has been able to tame many animals. Finally he says that with the same mouth we praise God and curse men. He wonders how from the same spring both fresh water and salt water can flow?

The above passage throws light to a very important truth: What we speak is vitally important!

Just think about all the hurts you had in life. Which are the ones that hurt you most? Was it the physical wounds or the verbal abuses of people? Surely you would answer that it was the verbal wounds that hurt you most. It might have even broken relationships.

Now think of the greatest hurt you caused others. Hurt through your words would rank first among the hurt you caused others. It tells us that our tongue and the words that we use have power–both for evil as well as for good.

So make it a point to speak good and ask for God’s grace so that your speaking may also be salted with grace: “Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone” (Colossians 4:6 NIV).

We are not naturally gifted with a gracious tongue. Most of us need a cleansing of the tongue. So pray in the words of Prophet Isaiah: “I am a man of unclean lips” that He may purify your lips with fire from His altar (Ref. Isaiah 6:5-7).
