Does the Name of God “Jehovah-Jireh” Mean that He Will Provide for Our Material Needs?

How sad to see the name of the Lord used in ways not intended in the Bible. One such example is God’s name Jehovah-Jireh. It is translated as The LORD will provide (Genesis 22;14).

The common use of this name of God is to say that God provided for our material needs like a house, car, or a job. This is not the true meaning of this name of God, though God’s material provisions for us also comes under it.
The entire incident of Abraham offering Isaac as sacrifice is a shadow of the cross. It shows the willing submission of the son (Isaac) as much as the willingness of the father (Abraham) to offer his son.

But God stops Abraham at the last moment. And Abraham sees a ram caught in the thicket. It was provided by God for the sacrifice. And he sacrificed that. It showed the coming day when in a nearby hill of Calvary God would offer his one and only Son Jesus for the sins of the whole world.

We are really a pain in God’s heart if we fail to see God’s ultimate provision for us—Jesus shedding his blood on the cross. And a greater pain to him when we use this revelation of his name—Jehovah-Jireh to get material blessings. Those blessings are included; but let us focus our eyes on the Lamb of God whom God provided for us.
Paul asked this question: “He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all—how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things (Romans 8:32)?

Abraham through this incident demonstrated his faith in God whom he believed could raise the dead (Hebrews 11:19). And his faith came to rest in Jesus because Jesus himself said, “Abraham rejoiced at the thought of seeing my day; he saw it and was glad” (John 8:56).

Jesus—he is God’s greatest provision in your life; any lesser focus is a tragedy. Praise be to Jehovah-Jireh!
