Choose to Serve God as a Family

Choices confront us almost every day. And the choices we make have consequences. Some choices impact us for a short time, but others can affect eternity. One such choice is about serving God. It is not just about one or two decisions. Instead serving God is an attitude of choosing for God on a daily basis.

This is not just an individual choice alone. It includes our family as well. Sadly, the Christian family as a godly unit is facing many crises today. Busy life, career pressures, raising kids in an immoral world, difficulties in making both ends meet, not able to find time for prayer and dinner together are all testing the strength of the family bond. Marriage break-ups, quarrels, separation, lack of intimacy, single parenthood, loneliness, boredom, and perhaps the thought that “I married the wrong person,” all can defeat the purpose that God intended for the family.

In spite of all negatives that you can find in your family you can choose blessing to come out of it all. Yes, it is a choice that you can and need to make. First and foremost, thank God for the situation you find yourself in. It can be that some troubles were of your own making, others imposed on you by others. Some other things you might have had no control over. Yet God can cause good to come out of it all (see Romans 8:28), if you make a courageous choice today.

Like Joshua, you can say, “But as for me and my household, we will serve the LORD” (Joshua 24:15b NIV). He was a man who was one of the greatest military strategist the world had seen and a great spiritual leader as well. Towards the end of his life he was seen to challenge God’s people to serve God. If you read the following verses as well, you will note that he says that following God is not an easy option. It definitely calls for a change of wrong behaviour.

But today, if you, in spite of all your doubts, misgivings and fears, would choose to serve God as a family, God can act on your behalf. Remember, family was not your idea. It was God’s plan. Family is still that place of worship which God is delighted in. And when you choose to serve God as a family, He Himself will give you the needed courage to act it out. He will give you the wisdom to run your family. He will heal wounds that harsh words and unkind actions had created. More than that He will bless you and your family with His Presence, Love, Joy and Peace.
