Wisdom

Paul writing to the Corinthians said that Christ is the wisdom of God! The world did not understand it. Therefore they crucified the Lord of glory.

Job quoted God saying to man: “The fear of the Lord–that is wisdom, and to shun evil is understanding.” In Psalms and Proverbs it is said that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.

In fact, the Book of Proverbs celebrates wisdom. It says that wisdom is supreme and therefore you have to get it even if it cost all you have. It says that wisdom is more precious than rubies. Nothing you desire can compare with her.

James tells us to ask for wisdom without doubting: “If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him.”

Again, it is written that the Lord brought forth wisdom as the first of His works; appointed from eternity, from the beginning, before the world began. Those who listen to wisdom daily are blessed and whoever finds wisdom finds life.

Then the Bible points out the big difference between worldly wisdom and godly wisdom. It is written that God has made foolish the wisdom of the world. Because the wisdom of the world does not enable one to know God.

Therefore God gave man the foolishness of the cross to be preached; and the foolishness of God is wiser than man’s wisdom. Therefore God permits a man to boast that he understands and knows God. And the Spirit of God makes known to us the true wisdom of God.

James tells us that bitter envy and selfish ambition in our hearts that leads to disorder and every kind of evil is a kind of “wisdom” that does not come down from heaven. But it is earthly, unspiritual and of the devil.

In contrast, the wisdom that comes from God enables one to lead a good life with deeds done in the humility that comes along with it. Again, such “wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere.” “The Lord knows the thoughts of man; he knows that they are futile” says the Psalmist.
