One of the characteristics of the tongue which James points out is worth a closer look. He says that the tongue can corrupt the whole person and can set the whole course of his life on fire.
We need to take this to heart. What we speak has a powerful influence on our entire being. This influence could be for good or evil. If we speak wrong things and bitter words it cuts right across our communication lines with God.
After speaking hurting words at people, it is impossible for a Christian to talk to God. So it is of utmost importance for us to watch ourselves from being corrupted by the things we talk.
Just think of all the times that you have entertained gossip and the talk of mockers. The Bible tells that “The words of a gossip are like choice morsels; they go down to a man’s inmost parts” (Proverbs 26:22 NIV).
So one of the ways you can keep yourselves uncorrupted is by not participating or listening to gossip. And God’s Word warns that you should not go about spreading slander among people (Ref. Leviticus 19:16).
One of the simplest ways to keep your tongue from sin is to talk less for “When words are many, sin is not absent” (Proverbs 10:19 NIV). Always keep in mind the words of Jesus that we will have to give account for every careless word we have during the day of judgment (Ref. Matthew 12:36,37).
Also avoid harsh words for it stirs up anger (Proverbs 15:1b) and use your words with restraint (Proverbs 17:27a). If you follow these steps you can keep your communication lines with God open.
