Battling Depression

The word depression immediately brings thoughts of darkness. Yes, depression can be described as absence of light. It can also be absence of joy.

When all the world seems happy and asks us to be like them we simply can’t. The sadness is increased when nobody understands what we are passing through.

They come out with nice sounding solutions. Only we know that it does not work. Others criticize, adding to our pain. But to add fuel to the fire comes the thought that all this is because God has rejected me!

Depression can have a variety of causes. But when you find yourselves passing through it, even small things can hurt and add to the lingering sense of worthlessness.

Sometimes you feel like ending your life but still you battle against this mad thought because you know you’re God’s child. Many hurtful thoughts from the past haunt you: Abuses, betrayals, denials, rejections, criticisms, failures and disappointments; all dance furiously with mocking faces right before your eyes. And you feel like giving up.

Now there are no easy solutions to depression. Yet the simplest message to you who suffer from this is “Don’t give up!” The battle might be long.

Yet God can and will ransom you unharmed from the battle waged against you: “He ransoms me unharmed from the battle waged against me, even though many oppose me” (Psalm 55:18 NIV). That means He will deliver you.

God is also asking you to “Wake up!” This is important to defeat depression. If you obey the result will be that you will make depression your captive. No longer will it conquer you (Ref. Judges 5:12). You have allowed it to rule over you long enough. It is not to be tolerated.

Arise! Wake up! Fight! “Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord rises upon you” (Isaiah 60:1 NIV). Surely darkness retreats for your light has come!
