The greatest defeats in Christian life are caused by despair over sin already committed. Many pray over it asking God’s forgiveness. But soon accusing thoughts from Satan bombard their mind.
This makes them feel that their sin has not been forgiven. This leads to despair. And many are led into the same sin again because of these accusing thoughts.
If you have experienced this you need to understand that accusing thoughts are from Satan. One of his names is “the accuser of our brothers.” He is said to accuse God’s children before God day and night.
And it is said that God’s children overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of God (Ref. Revelation 12:10,11).
When you experience Satan’s accusations you have to remember that you have an advocate in heaven. It is He who defends you against Satan’s accusations: “But if anybody does sin, we have one who speaks to the Father in our defense–Jesus Christ, the Righteous One” (1 John 2:1b NIV).
So in the face of Satan’s accusations you need to comfort yourself saying that Jesus is speaking in your defense in Heaven’s court before God.
At the same time you need to meditate on the fact that there is now no condemnation for you because you are in Christ Jesus (Ref. Romans 8:1). You can also be comforted from the words of Jesus to the woman caught in adultery. Jesus told her that He was not condemning her.
But He asked her to leave her life of sin. All this should encourage you not to despair when Satan accuses you. Take heart for Jesus your defender is strong!
